Safety & Accessibility
Visitors with all kinds of "ability" are welcome at Cheddar Caves & Gorge, and we will do our best to help you have a memorable and enjoyable day out. Cheddar Caves & Gorge are natural geological features, with 450ft (130m) high cliffs and caves that were once underground rivers, while some of our buildings were designed in the 1930s.

In such an unforgiving "hard" landscape, please ensure that your children, and other vulnerable individuals in your care, are supervised at all times and observe all Safety Notices displayed for your information. If your mobility is severely limited, then access to much of our 360 acre site will be impossible for you. See below.

We tell the story of Cheddar Caves & Gorge using different interpretive methods, catering both for adults' and children's levels of comprehension. However if you have difficulties with hearing or sight, some of these technologies will be of more use to you than others. The Accessibility Scale below rates each attraction or facility, ranging from what we recommend is suitable to what we consider is probably impossible, depending upon your abilities, with a large area in the middle for you to decide, given the particular access arrangements you might need and which we have been able to provide. Our Staff are on-hand to help you, so please discuss with them what is likely to be most suitable for you. Your ideas on what we can do to improve access for you will be very welcome.

We have campaigned for 20 years to build a Cable Car to carry our visitors, particularly those with impaired mobility, to the top of the cliffs to enjoy the wonderful views. However a few "stake holders" within the Local Planning Process continue to block our proposal.

Please e-mail hugh@cheddarcaves.co.uk supporting this proposal, if you think that a Cable Car would make the wilderness beauty of Cheddar Gorge more accessible to you.
