Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing in Britain’s biggest gorge is something that most people can only dream about. Your reality starts with a briefing by our RockSport Instructor as you are shown how to put on the climbing harness and climbing helmet that we provide. We suggest you wear loose fitting trousers, a sweatshirt for warmth and preferably walking boots with a rigid sole – alternatively, trainers will do. You are led past admiring on-lookers to the base of our 50ft high RockSport Buttress, rigged with 4 climbing ropes running through belay stations and back down to ground anchors.

The Instructor explains about route planning up a rock face, climbing using 3 points of contact and belaying a partner using a self-locking belay. Then you have seven routes to choose from, ranging from very easy to quite difficult, to see how many you can conquer during the session. At the top of each climb you are lowered off on your climbing rope (safety line) by the Instructor, and then you have a chance to recover your breath while you belay someone else. A Certificate of Achievement is awarded to everyone who successfully completes the session, once you’ve handed in your kit and sorted yourself out.

Total duration 1½ hours approx
